Double Magic is a self-initiated redesign for Australian indie artist Sunbeam Sound Machine, sparked by my feeling that the original release's cover art fell short of its atmospheric sound. As a long-time fan, I looked into his visual history and the album's core themes to craft a concept that felt far more representative of the music within.
By blending custom photography and image manipulation with graphic design, I created a visual direction tied directly to the album’s meaning. The result bridges the gap between the music’s introspective tone and its visual identity, delivering a compelling redesign built to shine both digitally and on physical vinyl

I analyzed the atmospheric soundscapes of Sunbeam Sound Machine’s Double Magic album alongside visual trends in the indie and dream-pop music spaces. Recognizing that the original artwork lacked a direct visual connection to the album's sonic depth, I researched the artist's personal background, leading me to capture original photography of winding river landscapes. I then experimented with digital manipulation techniques—specifically testing radial blurs and color adjustments—to create an immersive visual effect that mirrors the inward-pulling, hypnotic feel of the music.
The project produced a complete, self-initiated album artwork redesign utilizing original landscape photography and digital image editing. Deliverables included front cover artwork, back tracklist layouts, and high-fidelity vinyl and digital streaming mockups designed to showcase the visual identity across physical and digital formats.
This project served as strong practice in translating complex auditory themes into high-impact visual design. By taking full ownership of the pipeline—from on-location photography to digital manipulation and print/digital mockups—I demonstrated how intentional cover art can elevate a musical release, creating a compelling visual entry point that draws listeners in before they even hit play.

The original Double Magic release featured an abstract background with basic typography that felt disconnected from the album's deep ties to nature, particularly personal references like "Kananook," a track named after the creek running behind the artist's childhood home. Knowing the record was built around these living, historical landscapes, I leveraged my own photography to capture a winding river full of motion and life. I then digitally manipulated the imagery with a subtle radial blur that pulls the viewer inward, mirroring the immersive, hypnotic effect the music has on listeners and drawing them into the world the artist created.

Seeing the artwork brought to life on a physical vinyl sleeve captures the full intention behind the redesign. Before ever spinning the record, the radial visual pulls the viewer in and sparks curiosity, setting an inviting tone that evolves into an ephemeral, connected experience once the music plays and the album’s story unfolds.
